Participants from APF member institutions who recently completed the APF Facilitators Course have begun implementing capacity development activities for staff within their respective national human rights institutions (NHRIs).

The capacity development activities are designed to respond to a specific area of need within the NHRI:

  • Increasing knowledge on the International Criminal Court (Afghanistan)
  • Building foundational knowledge on monitoring (Bahrain) and sharing good practices on monitoring and investigation (Nepal)
  • Engaging on human rights issues with religious groups (Bangladesh)
  • Empowering women working in the NHRI investigation team (India)
  • Establishing a dialogue platform to support minority groups (Kazakhstan)
  • Translating and advocating human rights (Malaysia)
  • Capacity building on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (Maldives and Samoa)
  • Building skills and confidence to facilitate human rights activities (Mongolia and Thailand)
  • Building Pasifika engagement with UN human rights mechanisms (New Zealand)
  • Building foundational knowledge of human rights standards (Oman)
  • Strengthening the NHRI's efforts on torture prevention (Palestine)
  • Building understanding of disability and access issues (Sri Lanka).

In planning an activity for their colleagues, each participant will draw on knowledge and skills they have developed about the principles of adult learning and strategies to create an effective learning environment.

Participants who successfully implement their staff capacity development activity within the next six months will be invited to join the APF Facilitators' Network.

Regular meetings of APF Facilitators' Network will allow members to share their experiences, learn from each other and develop good practice approaches.

The first meeting is due to be held in October 2018.

The APF Facilitators' Network will also develop the Jakarta Code of Practice for Human Rights Facilitators, a resource for NHRIs in the region that the group began drafting during the regional workshop in December 2017.

Along with supporting the delivery of the APF training program, Network, members will also play a leading role to bolster their NHRI's education and outreach work.

More information on the APF Facilitators' Network is available from Kate Turner-Mann or Fasoha Aishath at the APF secretariat.
