The new leadership team of Fiji's Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission will shortly take part in an APF roundtable to discuss their roles.

The newly appointed leadership team of Fiji's Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission will shortly take part in an APF roundtable discussion to explore the nature, role and functions of national human rights institutions.

The APF High Level Dialogue for Commissioners will provide an opportunity for them to clarify their responsibilities as Commissioners and to discuss their individual and collective goals for their three-year terms.

The Commission's five-person leadership team, appointed on 8 May 2015, is headed by High Court Judge Mohamed Ajmeer.

Joining Justice Ajmeer are NGO advocate Sashi Kiran; lawyer and company director Faiz Khan; social worker Selina Lee-Wah; and media commentator and youth development volunteer Peceli Rokotuivuna.

The APF High Level Dialogue will include practical discussions on the role of national human rights institutions and the importance of engaging with both the State – including the government, parliament, judiciary, police and military – and with the community to promote and protect fundamental rights.

In the past month, Commission members have undertaken inspections of a number of places of detention across Fiji's two main islands.

"The APF strongly endorses the vital role that an independent national human rights institution can play to promote and protect the fundamental human rights of all Fijians," said Kieren Fitzpatrick, Director of the APF secretariat.

The APF met with the Commission's leadership team in Suva on 18 May 2015 to discuss their priorities and to offer support as they develop and undertake their program of activities.

The APF also held discussions with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the United Nations Development Project (UNDP) and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), three of the APF's key partners in the Pacific.

On 20 May 2015, the Fiji NGO Coalition on Human Rights and OHCHR jointly organised a public panel discussion on strengthening national human rights institutions in the Pacific.

The APF, represented by Ashley Bowe, Project Manager, was joined by speakers from Samoa's Office of the Ombudsman, the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission and civil society.

Panel members stressed the vital importance of national human rights institutions complying with the Paris Principles, which set out minimum standards in relation to their independence how they should operate.

The panel discussion, held to coincide with the May parliamentary session, provided an opportunity for Fiji's parliamentarians to learn more about the unique status, role and functions of national human rights institutions.

Date: 18 June 2015
