APF welcomes new training manager

الجرافيك Kate Turner-Mann

Good professional training and support should help people feel empowered to do their work better than ever, says Kate Turner-Mann.

Good professional training and support should help people feel empowered to do their work better than ever, according to Kate Turner-Mann, the APF's new regional training manager.

"You really see the impact that training can have when you're working with people and suddenly something clicks and they have that 'a-ha' moment. At that moment they can see all sorts of new possibilities and new ways of doing things," Kate said.

But that those 'a-ha' moments don't happen by chance. Effective training relies on extensive preparation and a clear understanding of the learning needs of participants.

"You need to respond to those needs by making information concise, relevant and easy to understand. On top of that, you also need to give people time to think about and discuss what they're learning," Kate said.

Providing support after the formal training program has finished is also vital so that people feel confident to apply their new knowledge and skills.

Kate said she is excited about the opportunity to further develop the APF's extensive suite of professional training courses and other services.

National human rights institutions face an enormous number of challenges every day. That’s why it is so important they have access to information, training and support that can assist them in their important work.

Prior to joining the APF, Kate was the Regional Training Project Manager–Asia Pacific with World Animal Protection, working in both its Sydney and London offices since 2011.

"What I loved about that role was the clear link between the welfare of animals and the welfare of people; by improving the lives of animals, you also improve the lives of people," she said.

"There were a lot of broader issues that animal welfare also touched on, such as promoting gender equality, reducing poverty and rebuilding communities after a natural disaster.

"However, I've always had a passion for human rights and I'm looking forward to working closely with the staff and Commissioners from all APF members, learning more about their work and identifying and sharing examples of good practice."
