The National Human Rights Commission has called for the draft Child Marriage Restraint Act 2014 to be scrapped.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for the draft Child Marriage Restraint Act 2014 to be scrapped, the Dhaka Tribune reported

Under the proposed legislation, parents could marry off their daughters at the age of 16 for any legitimate reason or by the approval of court.

The previous draft of the act had kept the minimum age of marriage for girls at 18 years.

At a seminar organised by the NHRC to mark International Women's Day 2015, speakers criticised the move to lower the age of marriage.

NHRC Chairman Professor Dr Mizanur Rahman said the NHRC had informed the government that the legislation would violate the rights of children if passed in its current form.

Speakers at the seminar also urged women's empowerment across all sectors of Bangladeshi society.

Kazi Reazul Haque, NHRC member, urged political parties to increase participation of women at the grassroots level.

Executive Director of Ain O Shalish Kendra, Sultana Kamal said that women had played an active role behind the development of the country since the Liberation War.

"It is true that the government is empowering women but this has been happening partially," she said.
