Commission holds session for journalists on LGBTI rights

الجرافيك Journalists take part in the discussion on LGBTI human rights

Discussions looked at how media representation of LGBTI people can inform community attitudes towards them and respect for their human rights.

Respecting the rights and identity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people in media reporting was the focus of discussions at the monthly meeting of the Journalists' Club for Human Rights, convened by the National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia.

Legal Programme Manager with the LGBT Centre, Baldangombo A., led the discussion session, which was held at the Commission's office on 5 October 2018.

Baldangombo clarified a number of key terms, such as 'sexual orientation' and 'gender identity', and described the way in which media representation of LGBTI people can inform community attitudes towards them and respect for their human rights.

He also provided journalists with advice in relation to engaging with the LGBTI community when developing articles and TV programs that address the human rights challenges that individuals can face.

The LGBT Centre has been operating in Mongolia since 2009. It is dedicated to achieving positive social change and a representative of the Centre serves as a member of the Commission's Ex-Officio Board.
