Commission requests support of Thailand NHRC in appeal of death sentence

Two Myanmar citizens have been sentenced to death for murder in Thailand.
U Win Mra, Chairperson of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, has sent a letter to Thailand's National Human Rights Commission seeking its cooperation during the appeal of two Myanmar citizens sentenced to death for murder in Thailand.
On 24 December 2015, Win Zaw Htun and Zaw Lin were sentenced to death for the killing two British tourists on Koh Tao, among several other charges.
U Win Mra urged the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand to monitor the appeal process "to see that the two Myanmar workers are accorded the rights they are entitled to" and that "they are accorded equal protection of the law without any discrimination and the enjoyment of the right to life".
He also noted that, following the verdict of the Kos Moi District Court, there had been "public demonstrations in Yangon and other cities in Myanmar calling for a fair verdict in the case and the release of the two".
