A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Public Prosecution and the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate.

On 28 September 2016, the Independent Commission for Human Rights (ICHR) witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Public Prosecution and the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate (PJS).

Aiming to promote cooperation and freedom of the press in Palestine, the MoU was signed by Ahmed Barrak, Attorney General, and Nasser Abu Baker, PJS Chairman.

Dr. Ammar Dweik, ICHR Director, said the ICHR would follow up on the Public Prosecution's commitment to not arrest or place restrictions on journalists on grounds of their professional media activity.

Dr. Dweik also announced that the ICHR would monitor the Public Prosecution's compliance with the MoU, stressing that it would consolidate public freedoms and freedom of the press in Palestine.

The MoU is an extension of the Declaration on Media Freedom in the Arab World. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was the first president to sign the Declaration.

Mr Barrak said that the MoU provided that journalists would not be detained on grounds of their media activity as long they as undertake their activities in good faith.
