Jordan to lead Arab Network of NHRIs

Jordan's National Centre for Human Rights assumed presidency of the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions at the group's 12th Conference.

Jordan's National Centre for Human Rights assumed the presidency of the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI) at the regional group's 12th Conference, which was held in Amman from 26-27 July 2015.

Representatives from 14 national human rights institutions discussed ANNHRI's annual report, the strategy and program of work for the next three years, providing assistance to member institutions in the network and cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme.

Representatives of the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights and the Arab League, as well as a number of institutions and commissions involved in human rights, participated in the conference.

Jordan's Minister of Justice Bassam Talhouni told participants that national human rights institutions have become a strategic partner to the government in promoting and protecting human rights.

Along with Jordan, national human rights institutions from Iraq, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Sudan, Mauritania, Comoros, Palestine and Somalia took part in the meeting.
