The National Human Rights Commission has taken a prominent role in a rally to mark Nepal's 10th National Day Against Human Trafficking, organised by the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare.

Held on 5 September 2016, NHRC Commissioners and staff joined representatives from government agencies, the National Women's Commission, Nepal Police, the armed police force and a wide range of NGOs for a march through the streets of Kathmandu.

The NHRC recorded a photo diary of the event.

The first woman chief justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal, Sushila Karki, addressed the rally and called on everyone to play their role to end human trafficking, including the government, The Himalayan Times reported.

"The statute has provided certain acts, but it is not sufficient as the government should start work from the local level," she noted.

A report by the NHRC in April 2016 revealed that around 16,500 Nepali citizens, mostly unmarried women and children, were trafficked during the past two years.

It also found that trafficking increased by 15 per cent in the three months following the April 2015 earthquake.
