Celebrating the NHRC's silver jubilee, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi said protection of human rights is a key part of the nation's culture.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the National Human Rights Commission had a key role to play in supporting the government's efforts to implement the Sustainable Development Goals.

Speaking at celebrations in New Delhi to mark the NHRC's 25th anniversary, the Prime Minister said the government was committed to improving the lives of people by ensuring their fundamental rights.

Prime Minister Modi said the protection of human rights is a key part of Indian culture.

Following independence, India had promoted an independent and impartial judiciary, an independent media and a vibrant civil society, he said.

Prime Minister Modi also praised the work of the NHRC, established in 1993 with a strong mandate to promote and protect human rights.

He cited a number of initiatives taken by the government in the past four years to improve access to justice and to promote the realisation of human rights, especially for those living in poverty.

The success of these initiatives was also a result of strong public participation, he noted.

To mark the NHRC's silver jubilee, the Prime Minister released a commemorative postal stamp and launched a new version of the NHRC website.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also addressed the event, highlighting the important position of the NHRC in India's institutional framework.

NHRC Chairperson H.L. Dattu said that the Commission's constant endeavour over the last 25 years has been to make itself as accessible as possible to the people.

The increase in the number of complaints received each year reflected the extent of its reach across the country, he said.

Justice Dattu concluded by stating that the silver jubilee celebrations were an opportunity for the NHRC to re-dedicate itself to achieving a just and equitable society by upholding the principles and ideals enshrined in India's constitution.

Further details of the NHRC's silver jubilee celebrations are available on the NHRC website.
