Establishment

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives was established as an independent statutory body on 10 December 2003 by the Human Rights Commission Act 6/2006.

Its goal is to lead the promotion and protection of human rights set out in the Maldives Constitution, Islamic Shari'ah and regional and international human rights conventions ratified by the Maldives

It also assists and encourages non-governmental organisations in creating awareness and in promoting human rights.

Role and Functions

The Commission has a broad mandate to promote and protect human rights in the Maldives, including:

• investigating complaints of human rights violations
• visiting any authority, jail or organisation in the Maldives and to submit necessary recommendations for the protection of human rights
• reviewing existing laws, regulations or administrative rules against human rights standards and, where necessary, providing advice and recommendations to the Government
• advising the Government in relation to the ratification of regional and international human rights instruments
• conducting research and carry out relevant surveys on human rights;
• delivering training, education and awareness raising activities to develop a culture of respect for human rights among all groups of people in the Maldives.
