Commission urges swift investigation into murder of blogger

The Commission has condemned the violent attack that led to the brutal murder of Mr. Yaameen Rasheed, a prominent blogger in the Maldives.
The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives is deeply saddened and concerned about the increase in violations of the most fundamental right, the right to life.
The Commission condemns the violent and inhumane attack that led to the brutal murder of Mr. Yaameen Rasheed at S. Feydhoo, Chanbeyleege on April 23, 2017.
Threats made to life and messages which are meant to intimidate create restlessness and deteriorate the social fabric of a society.
Hence, the Commission calls upon all concerned parties to strengthen the efforts being made to prevent the repetition of such violent crimes and to work towards maintaining social harmony with the view to prioritize the establishment of law and order and preserve national interest.
Further, the Commission would like to take this opportunity to call upon all relevant authorities to ensure that the people who are behind such atrocious acts are swiftly brought to justice.
Additionally, we would like to urge everyone lo extend all respect and courtesy to the bereaved families and ensure that they cooperate with the ongoing investigations and they do not impede the investigative process.
The Commission extends our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Yaameen Rasheed.
