Human Rights Policy and Practice Forum 2009

Two day conference aims to critically explore the human rights policy and practice in Australia in an open and interactive format, allowing for a robust discussion between all participants.

When: 20 – 21 October 2009

Where: Melbourne, Australia

Human rights are not just about the development and interpretations of the law. They are crucial in implementing policies and practices to develop and sustain a culture that respects human rights.

The possibility of introducing national human rights charter is gaining momentum. Furthermore, the Apology brought back the focus on Indigenous Rights, and the debate on Indigenous compensation is continuing.

All together, the range of social justice issues burning in Australian communities and institutions is proving an enormous task for policy makers and those people working tirelessly in our communities to achieve positive change.

The Human Rights Policy and Practice Forum aims to critically explore the human rights policy and practice in Australia in an open and interactive format, allowing for a robust discussion between all participants.

This event is addressing challenging content and is a must attend event for all policy makers and practitioners who are seeking a broad understanding of the most pressing issues today.

Key areas of discussion during the two-day conference will include:

  • Protecting our rights and fulfilling our responsibilities - a common sense approach
  • Ensuring our most vulnerable citizens are fairly represented and protected
  • Commitment to human rights and its practice in the public services
  • Indigenous rights and compensation

Malcolm Fraser, Australia’s Prime Minister from November 1975 to March 1983 and Founding Chairman of CARE Australia, will be one the conference's Featured Speakers.
