When: 30 May - 3 June 2010
Where: Male’, Maldives
National human rights institutions are increasingly engaging with regional and international bodies, such as the United Nations Human Rights Council and human rights treaty bodies.
To operate successfully in the international human rights system, NHRIs need a clear understanding of the roles, functions and processes of the different organisations, as well as the skills required to engage effectively with them.
To support member institutions in this work, the APF has been presenting a series of sub-regional workshops for APF member institutions, focusing on understanding and engaging with the international human rights system.
The first sub-regional workshop, held in 2007, involved participants from West Asia NHRIs. The second workshop, for South-east Asia NHRIs, was held in 2009.
The forthcoming week-long training program will involve the participation of representatives from the national human rights commissions in South Asia: India, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
Invitations will also be extended to the national human rights institutions / relevant agencies in Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The program provides participants with an overview of the development of international human rights law, how those laws are monitored and the practical steps that NHRIs can take to contribute to regional and international human rights systems.
The training program also looks at the international standards that apply to NHRIs and the factors that can strengthen the independence and effectiveness of their work at a national level.
