Joint team conducts inspection of pre-trial detention centre

The Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia was joined by leading parliamentarians.

A joint working group included the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia and leading parliamentarians conducted an on-the-spot visit to a pre-trial detention centre in Ulaanbaatar on 25 January 2017.

The joint working group included D.Tsogtbaatar, Chairman of Sub-Committee on Human Rights of the Parliament; S.Byambatsogt, Minister of Justice and Home Affairs; Byambadorj Jamsran, NHRC Chief Commissioner; B.Ganbaatar, President of Advocates Association of Mongolia; E. Amarbat, Head of Internal Security Division of the State Prosecutor General's Office.

The Commission organised the inspection of Pre-trial Detention Center 461 in order to assess the ability of detainees to access legal assistance, to determine whether they have access to visits by their families and advocates, and to ensure that meeting rooms comply with international standards.

The joint team noted the inmates can meet with their family members and advocates without external interference and oversight and decided to consider potential changes with regard to inmates' right to legal assistance in the Criminal Procedure Code.
