A new Act on Gender Equality came into effect in Mongolia on 2 February 2011.
The Act assigns an additional role for the Commission in the following two areas:
- investigation of complaints in relation to gender-based discrimination (Article 23.1, 24.1)
- reporting to the Parliament every two years on the implementation of gender equality legislation and complaints resolution (Article 15.1.4.b).
The Act on Gender Equality pays special attention to improving women’s representation in decision-making positions by establishing certain quotas.
Under the Act, the government is obliged to develop and implement step-by-step plans and programs to realise the quota system.
