Nepal: NHRC initiates probe into poll campaign murder

The NHRC has initiated a preliminary investigation of the killings in Dang and Surkhet during Nepal's recent election campaign.

The NHRC has initiated a preliminary investigation of the killings in Dang and Surkhet during Nepal's recent election campaign.

Chief of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Kedar Nath Upadhyaya said that the NHRC has initiated a preliminary investigation of the killings in Dang and Surkhet during the recent election campaign. 

In separate incidents of shootouts, CPN (UML) candidate of Surkhet district constituency No: 1 Rishi Prasad Sharma and seven Maoist cadres were killed in Dang on 8 April.

In a meeting held with the representatives of Peace and Conflict Management Committee and Office of the High Commissioner of the Human Rights, Upadhyaya said that the NHRC had taken the incidents of killings seriously.

He said that the NHRC would take initiative to find out the truth and end the culture of impunity in the country.

Commissioners of NHRC Ram Nagina Singh, Gauri Pradhan, and Dr. K.B. Rokaya were also present.
