Nepal: NHRC urges dialogue

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Nepal has expressed grave concern over the critical situation in the country and urged concerned political parties to resolve the present political crisis by dialogue.

Issuing a press statement on Monday, NHRC said, "This adverse situation may seriously affect the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, Interim Constitution of Nepal-2007 and institutionalising the efforts of the People's Democratic Movement in 2006".

This situation may affect long on the daily livelihood of people, human rights and peace and security, the statement said.

NHRC showed such concern after the Prime Minister Prachanda declared resignation from his post.

NHRC in statement further said, "In this situation, Constitution and Laws have to be analyzed for the well being of national interest, rather than favoring any particular group".

The commission urged all the concerned political parties to resolve the present political crisis by dialogue and mutual agreement for fully implementing Comprehensive Peace Agreement, making constitution as per the schedule, and respecting and protecting the human rights of all Nepali people.

The Comprehensive Peace Accord was signed in November, 2006, ending the decade civil war in Nepal.

NHRC is an independent and autonomous constitutional body. It was established in the year 2000 as a statutory body under the Human Rights Commission Act 1997. The Interim Constitution of Nepal 2007 made the NHRC a constitutional body.
