Nepal: NHRC urges Govt to ratify Rome Statute
Ratifiying the Statute would help improve the country's human rights situation, giving the International Criminal Court jurisdiction over crimes related to massacre, genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, said the NHRC.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Wednesday recommended the government to ratify the Rome Statute of International Criminal Court as per the provision of Article 132 (2) of the Interim Constitution.
The NHRC has sent a recommendation to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers with its report studied on the Rome Statute.
The NHRC has reminded the government that the Reinstated House of Representatives had already instructed the government to ratify the Statute and the Supreme Court had also ordered to formulate necessary law to implement the Geneva Treaty of Humanitarian Law 1949.
With the ratification of the Statute the human rights situation would be improved and state of impunity would be ended, as the international criminal court would have automatic jurisdiction over the crime related to massacre, genocide, crime against humanity and war crime, the NHRC said.
