The new Chief Commissioner of the New Zealand Human Rights Commission, David Rutherford, began his five-year term on 1 September 2011.
Before taking up the position, Mr Rutherford was the managing director of Special Olympics Asia Pacific and prior to that was chief executive of the New Zealand Rugby Union.
He has worked as a sport and commercial lawyer and a lecturer in sports law, with a particular focus on human rights law.
Mr Rutherford is a passionate advocate for sport and promoting the rights of people with disabilities. He also has strong community links with young people and education.
Outgoing Chief Commissioner Rosslyn Noonan said, “David Rutherford has demonstrated strong and practical commitment to human rights across a range of areas. He will bring a wealth of experience in organisational leadership, fresh energy and new perspectives to the Commission.”
In addition, the New Zealand Government announced this month that a Commissioner with formal responsibility for disability issues will be appointed to the Commission.
Paul Gibson will lead the Commission’s work with other organisations to monitor the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Date: 15 September 2011
