The UDHR, 60 years after: Between rhetoric and reality
Held on 1 and 2 December 2008, the Third International Conference of Cairo will mark the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Held on 1 and 2 December 2008, the Third International Conference of Cairo will mark the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The conference also aims to provide exchange of experiences and consolidation of ties between African and Arab NHRIs and NGOs, stimulate meaningful participation of NHRIs and NGOs in the UN's Universal Periodic Review process, and analyse the lessons learned and promotion of best practices among NHRIs and NGOs.
Sessions topics will include:
- Achievements of the UDHR
- Challenges to the UDHR (including terrorism, racism, fundamentalism, and armed conflicts)
- Poverty and human rights
- Women and human rights
- Towards a Permanent Forum of Arab-African Dialogue on Democracy and Human Rights
The conference is being organised by the Egyptian National Council for Human Rights, UNESCO, the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.
