Training
The APF’s training programs aim to build the professional skills and strengthen the capacity of both Commissioners and staff so they can do their work more effectively.
Each training program is tailored to meet the specific needs of APF member institutions and individual participants. The APF uses expert presenters – many of whom are drawn from APF member institutions – to conduct its training programs and to lead individual sessions.
Since 2009, the APF has delivered a number of its core training programs online. It is now an integral part of our training strategy.
All training courses are evaluated to ensure that they meet the needs of our members.
In addition, APF members are invited to provide information about their training needs on an annual basis, which we use to guide the development and delivery of our training program.
The APF’s training program also includes thematic regional workshops, which bring together senior staff from our members, as well as governments and civil society groups, to share expertise, build partnerships and develop practical strategies to address the pressing human rights issues of the Asia Pacific.

Foundation Course
The Foundation Course aims to introduce new staff of APF member institutions to the history, role and mandate of NHRIs.
Prevention of Torture
Provides staff in APF member institutions with the knowledge, skills and processes to effectively monitor places of detention and investigate allegations of torture
International Human Rights System
Offers an overview of the development of international human rights law, how those laws are monitored and the practical steps that NHRIs can take to contribute to regional and international human rights systems
National Inquiries
Provides a step-by-step guide to establishing and conducting effective national inquiries into pressing human rights issues.
Rights of Migrant Workers
'Human Rights and Migrant Workers – A Training Program for Advocates' brings together representatives from national human rights institutions, NGOs and trade unions in the Asia Pacific region.
Human Rights Defenders
Helps staff from APF member institutions to understand the role and functions of human rights defenders and the international standards and mechanisms that protect their rights.
Investigations Techniques
Assists APF members develop the capacity to investigate alleged human rights abuses effectively and in accordance with international standards and best practice
Media and Communications
The Media and Communications training program provides APF members with an overview of how media outlets work, how news is selected and strategies for engaging journalists on human rights issues
