Rights of People with Disabilities
The International Workshop on Promoting the Rights of People with Disabilities: Towards a New United Nations Convention was held in New Delhi, India from 26 to 30 May 2003.
The goal of the workshop was to promote a better understanding of the rights of persons with disabilities; the proposal to develop a new UN Convention on disability; and the potential role of NHRIs in this process.
The specific objectives of the workshop were to promote effective cooperation and collaboration between Commonwealth and Asia Pacific NHRIs on issues relating to the rights of persons with disabilities; encourage NHRIs to take steps to ensure improved recognition of the rights of persons with disabilities; and develop a consensus position on the proposed new UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities.
Workshop participants included NHRI representatives from Afghanistan, Australia, Fiji, India, Ghana, Iran, Korea, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Uganda.
The workshop was organised by the APF, the National Human Rights Commission of India and the British Council. Support for the workshop was provided by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
