Internally Displaced Persons

Regional Workshop on National Human Rights Institutions and Internally Displaced Persons; Colombo, Sri Lanka; 26-28 October 2005

The APF Regional Workshop on National Human Rights Institutions and Internally Displaced Persons was hosted by the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka and jointly organised by the APF/Brookings-Bern Project on Displacement and the Sri Lankan Commission.

The workshop was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka between 26-28 October 2005. The objectives of the workshop were to:

  • Exchange experiences and strategies relating to the protection of IDPs;
  • Increase regional knowledge and understanding of IDP human rights issues;
  • Develop further capacity-building initiatives for NHRIs; and
  • Strengthen collaboration among NHRIs, by developing an IDP Focal Point Network.

Workshop participants included APF members from Afghanistan, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand and Sri Lanka. Other participants included the National Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, the Brookings-Bern Project on Internal Displacement, United Nations agencies, and local, regional and international non-governmental organisations.

Financial support for the workshop was provided by the APF/Brookings-Bern Project on Internal Displacement and the New Zealand Government’s development agency, NZAID.
