Senior communications officers from all 25 APF member institutions have been invited to join a new online community to share their expertise and to develop new skills.

The online community will also be a place where they can find practical information and case studies on priority communication topics, including digital storytelling, using social media for advocacy and conducting human rights campaigns.

APF Communications Expert James Iliffe will facilitate the online community, which is open to members of the APF Communications Network.

"With human rights under serious attack in countries across the region, it is more important than ever that NHRIs stand up for fundamental values, combat prejudice and address shifting community perceptions," Mr Iliffe said.

"That's why NHRIs need skilled and confident communicators and a clear strategy to guide their communication and advocacy efforts," he said.

"This community will support the work of NHRIs by being a place where we can share ideas, ask questions, find inspiration and encourage one another."

There have been two meetings of the APF Communications Network: the first hosted by the National Human Rights Commission of Nepal (April 2016) and the second hosted by the National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh (November 2017).

A third meeting of the APF Communications Network will be held in Ulaanbaatar from 28-30 August 2019, hosted by the National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia.

"The online community is a great way for us to stay in touch between these meetings and continue to exchange ideas and expertise," Mr Iliffe said.

He said the online community of the APF Communications Network would:

  • Promote excellence, by developing high-quality resources on key areas of human rights communication and advocacy
  • Be relevant, by sharing resources and facilitating discussion that responds to the needs and priorities of members
  • Be responsive and inclusive, by encouraging participation from all members and addressing questions and requests for information.

"The goal is to always keep learning and keep refining our communication skills so our NHRIs can be effective advocates and press for changes that make a difference in people's lives," Mr Iliffe said.
