APF members start new business and human rights course

Participants from 20 APF member institutions – including our newest members, Iraq and Bahrain – recently began the first stage of a new blended learning course on business and human rights.

Facilitated by the Danish Institute of Human Rights, the course introduces participants to the three pillars of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights: protect, respect and remedy.

In particular, it explores how the mandate of Paris Principle-compliant NHRIs applies to business and human rights, including looking at practical actions that NHRIs can take to implement the Guiding Principles.

These actions can include, among other things, applying standards and principles on business and human rights in national policy, legislation and regulation; monitoring and reporting; and providing access to remedy to benefit rights-holders in their countries.

The training is especially timely for APF members, as many are currently undertaking a range of programs to work with business to improve their understanding and capacity to address human rights issues across all aspects of their operations.

The online learning component of the business and human rights training course runs from 3 April–5 May 2017. It will be followed by a three-day face-to-face workshop in Bangkok, Thailand, from 5–7 June 2017.
