Call to sign key human rights conventions

الجرافيك Dr Ali Shameem addresses the Commission's Human Rights Day event

The former member of the Human Rights Commission also advocated for the immediate enforcement of the Human Rights National Action Plan.

The President of the Civil Service Commission Dr Ali Shameem has expressed concern that two core human rights conventions remained unsigned by the Government of Maldives.

The two conventions relate to the rights of expatriates living in the Maldives and the other protects people from enforced disappearances.

Speaking at the event celebrating Human Rights Day hosted by the Human Rights Commission of Maldives, Shameem urged action by the new administration.

"I am calling for the Government of Maldives to sign the two conventions at this special event today," said Shameem, a former member of the Human Rights Commission.

Shameem advocated for the immediate enforcement of the Human Rights National Action Plan, which he said had been overlooked for years.

He also urged the national parliament to discuss the work of the Human Rights Commission, including debating its annual report.

In other countries, Shameem noted, there is a dedicated Human Rights Committee to lead such discussions.

"There needs to be a special Human Rights Act in Maldives," said Shameem.

"Protection of human rights laws should not simply be left in the hands of the Government and the Human Rights Commission".
