The IHCHR said it is monitoring public demonstrations against corruption that have resulted in protestors being killed and wounded.

The Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights said in a statement that it is monitoring citizen-led demonstrations against corruption that have resulted in protestors being killed and wounded.

Commission member Judge Mushriq Naji said the Commission supported the right of people to hold peaceful demonstrations to demand reform.

He said such demonstrations are the legitimate right of every citizen according to the Iraqi Constitution and it is the duty of all to support and provide them with legal protection.

"It is also the right of all citizens to demand their guaranteed rights and call for the support of any party fighting corruption, for reform and for the protection of public property," Judge Mushriq Naji said.

"The IHCHR calls on the responsible security authorities to protect the protestors and prevent using force against them by any party and to take legal measures against those involved in falling martyrs and wounding demonstrators."

The Commission called on all its affiliated offices in the governorates to exercise their role to monitor the protests and to document any human rights violations that may occur, in accordance with the legal jurisdiction granted to them.
