The National Human Rights Commission has met with representatives from the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) to discuss the situation of human rights defenders in Mongolia.

The meeting, held on 25 September, examined the challenges faced by human rights defenders in the country, as well as recent steps to promote and protect their rights.

Chief Commissioner Byambadorj Jamsran described the work of the Commission to develop a draft law on human rights defenders in collaboration with civil society organisations.

The draft Bill has been shared with members of Mongolia's parliament.

During their visit to Mongolia from 24 September to 1 October 2018, the ODIHR delegates met with representatives from government agencies and civil society organisations.

Similar visits will be undertaken in a number of Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) participating States to identify challenges and good practice in the protection of human rights defenders.

The final report on the assessment of the human rights defenders is expected to be released in 2019.
