Conference examines human rights situation in Palestine

A two-day international conference has examined the human rights impact of Israel's occupation of the Palestinian Territories and the role of national human rights institutions (NHRIs) to address systemic violations.

The National Center for Human Rights in Jordan, in cooperation with the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions and the Independent Commission for Human Rights in Palestine, organised the conference on "The Prolonged Israeli Occupation and the Reality of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories Occupied Since 1967".

The conference was held on 12 and 13 May 2018, under the auspices of Dr. Hani Al-Mulqi, Prime Minister of Jordan.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights was represented at the event, along with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territories occupied since 1967.

Dr Sima Samar, Chairperson of the Afghanistan Independent Commission on Human Rights and APF Chairperson moderated a session at the conference.

Other participants included Arab and foreign experts and jurists, as well as representatives from Arabic NHRIs, current and former government officials from Jordan and other countries, representatives from civil society and representatives from international organisations.

Mr. Saad Al-Abdullah, Director of the APF's Sub-Regional Office for West Asia, also participated in the conference.

A communique, including a series of recommendations for action, was issued by participants at the conclusion of the conference.

أستضاف المركز الوطني لحقوق الإنسان بالأردن بالتنظيم والتعاون مع الشبكة العربية للمؤسسات الوطنية لحقوق الإنسان والهيئة المستقلة لحقوق الإنسان في فلسطين، يومي 12 – 13 مايو 2018 مؤتمراً حول "الاحتلال الإسرائيلي طويل الأمد وواقع حقوق الإنسان في الأراضي الفلسطينية المحتلة عام 1967". وشارك في أعمال المؤتمر الذي أقيم في العاصمة الأردنية عمّان برعاية رئيس الوزراء الأردني الدكتور هاني الملقي، والمفوضية السامية لحقوق الإنسان، والمقرر الخاص للأراضي الفلسطينية، ونخبة من المفكرين والخبراء العرب والأجانب، ورجال القانون والمسؤولين الحاليين والسابقين من داخل الأردن وخارجه، إضافة إلى المؤسسات الوطنية العربية لحقوق الانسان وممثلي المجتمع المدني والمنظمات والهيئات المحلية والدولية.

شارك منتدى الآسيا باسيفيك ممثلاً برئيسة المنتدى الدكتورة سيما سامار ومدير المكتب الإقليمي للمنتدى لغرب آسيا السيد سعد العبدالله في المؤتمر، وكانت الدكتورة سيما سامار قد ترأست الجلسة الرابعة بعنوان "اللآجئون الفلسطينيون وحق العودة كمسؤولية دولية"، وخرج المشاركون في المؤتمر ببيان ختامي وعدد من التوصيات.
