The Commission met with demonstrators who raised issues around the delivery of basic services and problems of unemployment, housing and water.

The Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights has called for the government to meet the legitimate demands of the demonstrators in Baghdad and the provinces and implement its promise to improve the delivery basic services to communities across the country.

Commission spokesperson Dr Ali al-Bayati said the Commission monitored a demonstration in Basra province, organized by the Civil Movement and the Coordination Committees, which included the participation of citizens on the road between the city centre and Zubayr district.

He said the demonstrators handed a series of demands to the IHCHR commission, including the delivery of basic services and addressing problems of unemployment, housing, water salinity, the operation of suspended factories and the disbursement to provinces of petrodollar funds.

Dr Ali al-Bayati said it was responsibility of the central government and local government in the respective provinces to meet those demands.

He also criticised the absence of local officials to listen to the demands of the demonstrators, while praising the performance of the security forces charged with protecting the demonstration and enjoying full cooperation with the demonstrators.
