The National Human Rights Commission of Korea has established a group of community representatives to monitor the situation of older persons.

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) has established a group of community representatives to monitor the situation of older persons in different parts of the country.

The NHRCK has appointed 71 older persons as members of the seventh monitoring group on the human rights of older persons. They will cover five areas as part of their monitoring activities, including the Seoul metropolitan region, Busan, Gwangju, Daegu, and Daejeon.

Group members will receive training to support their monitoring role, which will run for four months until September 2015.

The monitoring group will check on care facilities for older persons, housing of older persons in difficulty and age discrimination in employment.

The information gathered by group members will support the NHRCK to devise practical policy measures to promote the human rights of older persons.

The NHRCK believes that, with a rapidly ageing population, it is essential to support older people to continue to participate in the social and economic life of their communities.

The NHRCK has been supporting monitoring activities to promote the human rights of older persons since 2009.
