The NHRC monitoring teams noted significant participation of senior citizens, pregnant women and people with disabilities in the voting process.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said that the first phase of the local elections were largely peacefully across all 34 districts, however some violent incidents had occurred.

In a press statement, the NHRC said its monitoring teams noted significant participation of senior citizens, pregnant women and people with disabilities in the voting process.

The NHRC also said that, in many districts, people had arrived at the polling stations after walking on foot for many hours.

However, the national rights body requested the Election Commission to improve voter education, voter identity card distribution and polling station management ahead of the second phase of the local polls, scheduled for 14 June 2007.

The NHRC also recommended that the Government punish those involved in poll-related violence, to provide free medical treatment to those injured and to secure release of the candidates abducted on the eve of the election.

The NHRC said that a person was killed in police action in Dolakha, another was killed in Kavre from fire opened by Armed Police Force personnel, and a ward-level candidate of the CPN (Maoist Center) was abducted in Chitwan.

It also reported minor scuffles and the detonation of improvised explosive devices in other districts.
