NHRC to host conference on addressing impunity

The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) will host an international conference next month on 'National, regional and international mechanisms to combat impunity and ensure accountability under international law'. on April 14-15 in Doha.

The conference, to be held in Doha on 14-15 April, will bring together more than 250 representatives of States, governmental and non-governmental organisations, national human rights institutions, UN mechanisms, regional bodies and specialised tribunals

Presentations and discussions will consider the issue of combating impunity and ensuring accountability in relation to the:

• Duty to investigate and prosecute
• Victims' right to remedies
• Victims' right to know
• Victims' right to justice
• Victim's right to reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence.

The conference will draw on relevant international law and principles, in particular the Basic Principles and Guidelines on the Right to a Remedy and Reparation for Victims of Gross Violations of International Human Rights Law and Serious Violations of International Humanitarian Law.

Participants will discuss how these principles are being applied by sharing experiences of international, regional and national mechanisms in enforcing these principles and in enhancing accountability.

The NHRC will host the conference in cooperation with OHCHR and the European Parliament.
