الجرافيك Charles Dean

Each month, we’re profiling a passionate and committed individual from one of our member institutions.

Name and job title:

Charles Dean, Legal and Investigating Officer, Office of the Ombudsman, Samoa.

Could you tell us a bit about your role?

I provide legal and policy advice primarily on human rights issues and, where necessary, to the Ombudsman and whole Office on institutional matters.

I am also responsible for conducting investigations, inspecting detention facilities, providing advice to the State and monitoring and reporting on human rights issues in Samoa.

What do you love about your role?

I enjoy engaging with partners to promote and protect human rights as well as learning from my other colleagues.

What's the most challenging aspect of your job?

Finding practical and appropriate ways to promote human rights in Samoa so that it aligns with the context.

Why did you decide to work in human rights?

It was mainly out of interest. I foresaw human rights as an area where personally I felt I would be able to make an impact on people's lives through providing advice on ways to further strengthen the protection of human rights in Samoa.

What is your proudest achievement?

My current workplace being recognised as a reputable human rights office in the Pacific region for its work. Knowing that I have been part of such work makes me proud.

What is your favourite book?

I love comics and cookbooks.
