"Supporting people to be healthy and productive is one of the most important responsibilities of the State," Al-Bayati said.

"When people are physically and mentally healthy, they are better able to contribute to their communities."

Al-Bayati said it was important to build health and environmental awareness within the community, especially as people in Iraqi suffer from interrelated problems of pollution and a lack of adequate housing.

During the meeting, participants also discussed the phenomenon of suicide in the community, including its psychological, social and economic causes; the health status of people held in prisons and other places of detention; the development of the Health Insurance Law; and the wages of doctors in private medical clinics and its oversight mechanism.
