An application to join the APF from the Ombudsman of the Kyrgyz Republic will be considered by Forum Councillors next month at the 23rd APF Annual Meeting.

Established in 2002, the Office of the Ombudsman was accredited with 'B status' by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions in 2012.

As the national human rights institution (NHRI) of the Kyrgyz Republic, it has a broad mandate to promote and protect human rights. The founding law gives the Ombudsman authority to comment on any issue related to human rights and to address any human rights case.

The APF currently has 24 members, 16 accredited with 'A status' and eight with 'B status'.

The 23rd APF Annual Meeting, to be held in Hong Kong from 18-19 September 2018, will bring together all 24 APF member institutions, along with representatives from the NHRIs of Fiji, Pakistan and Tuvalu.

APF members will provide an overview of their current activities and priorities, as well as hold an open dialogue with civil society organisations in the region on issues of shared concern.

Elections will also be held for the new five-member APF Governance Committee, as well as a number of roles to represent the Asia Pacific region at the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions.

Immediately following the Annual Meeting, APF members will take part in the two-day International Conference on Equality.

Co-hosted by the APF and the Hong Kong Equal Opportunity Commission, the discussions will explore progress on equality in Hong Kong and across the Asia Pacific.

In particular, keynote speakers and participants will share their insights on progress and challenges in relation to: women and equality; racial equality; and equality for people with disabilities.
