Thousands of cases of enforced disappearance lodged with IHCHR

Iraq's national human rights institution has received 7,663 cases of enforced disappearance since the beginning of 2017.
The Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights (IHCHR) said it has received 7,663 cases of enforced disappearance since the beginning of 2017.
Commissioner Dr Anas Al-Azzawi said that the IHCHR had confirmed the fate of 652 people.
A total of 938 cases of enforced disappearances were lodged with the IHCHR during the first half of 2019, with 25 cases confirmed.
Dr Anas Al-Azzawi said the IHCHR continues to search for the remaining people through its special mechanism.
The IHCHR follows up on the allegations of the families of the disappeared and seeks information and answers from the concerned authorities to determine whether the person is dead, disappeared or missing, Dr Al-Azzawi said.
The IHCHR also seeks to ensure justice and accountability for the individual and their family, he added.
Dr Al-Azzawi said that the statistics covered the period during the liberation of areas from Daesh but not the period of Daesh control. The statistics also do not include the provinces of the Kurdistan Region.
