TPA Toolbox

There was enormous diversity in the focus of the Torture Prevention Ambassadors' country projects.

Each project required different partnerships and different approaches.

The TPA Toolbox brings together the various resources and reports that our Torture Prevention Ambassadors produced as part of their projects.

Our Good Practice Report highlights the common elements that emerged from all the projects.


Australia

Changing minds, changing laws: addressing cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment of asylum seekers

Objective: A heightened public awareness of the deleterious impacts of mandatory indefinite immigration detention on the health and wellbeing of detainees, particularly children, leading to increased public support for reform in this area to make law and policy consistent with international human rights obligations

New Zealand

Expanding the scope and reach of OPCAT monitoring

Objective: Investigate whether OPCAT monitoring in New Zealand can be expanded in scope to address existing gaps where elderly and others groups are vulnerable to abuse

In 2016, the New Zealand Human Rights Commission published He Ara Tika: A Pathway Forward, a report on the scope and role of OPCAT in relation to aged care and disability residences and facilities


Mongolia

A manual for prevention

Objective: Build the capacity of current and future NHRI staff to undertake the role of NPM by developing a prison monitoring manual and training staff on its use


Law enforcement officials attend a workshop on preventing torture, Mongolia

In 2016, the National Human Rights Commission of Mongolia published a`practical handbook on the key steps in preventing torture and ill-treatment in places of detention (content in English and Mongolian).
