The APF's sub regional office in Doha will deliver a range of services and programs to strengthen national human rights institutions in West Asia over the coming year.
The 2017 work plan was developed when staff from the sub-regional office visited the APF secretariat in Sydney for discussions on 2-3 February 2017.
The APF sub regional office, which is hosted with the support of the National Human Rights Committee of Qatar, was established in March 2016.
Dr. Ali Bin Samikh Al-Marri, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee of Qatar, also travelled to Sydney to contribute to the planning process.
Priorities for the APF sub-regional office over the coming 12 months include:
- Supporting the ongoing development of the Arabic-language APF website
- Strengthening the capacity of APF members in West Asia to fulfil their mandates
- Helping deliver activities that strengthen APF members' knowledge and skills in relation to priority human rights issues, such as protecting and promoting the rights of women and girls.
The first activity for 2017 was a high-level roundtable meeting on the proposed statute changes to the Sub-Committee on Accreditation of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).
Held on 22 February 2017, the roundtable was attended by full APF members and provided them with the opportunity to discuss the proposed changes in more detail with GANHRI representatives.
The meeting was held following the International Conference on Human Rights Approaches to Conflict Situations in the Arab Region, hosted by the National Human Rights Committee of Qatar.
Date: 10 February 2017
