APF launches new Strategic Plan

The APF has launched its new Strategic Plan 2022-27, which sets out its shared vision for an Asia Pacific where human rights are universally enjoyed and respected.

“We’re thrilled to share our new Strategic Plan following extensive consultation with our members, stakeholders, and partners across the region and internationally,” said APF Chairperson Emeritus Professor Rosalind Croucher AM.

As a network of 25 national human rights institutions (NHRIs) across the Asia Pacific region, the APF operates in a complex geo-political context where human rights are increasingly under threat.

In recent years, the region has seen a rise in the number of authoritarian regimes and populist ideologies which have begun to erode the rules-based order and democratic traditions that are crucial to protecting human rights.

The COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and a decline in civic space have also impacted human rights across the region.

In responding to these challenges, the APF Strategic Plan 2022-27 describes how the APF will work to strengthen the capacity of its members to carry out their human rights mandate.

It also outlines the APF’s commitment to supporting the establishment of new NHRIs in the region, and building a strong, engaged network committed to working together to address and advocate on a range of human rights issues.

"I believe the collaborative nature of the strategic planning process has led to a Plan which reflects the rich diversity of our membership and their strong commitment to human rights."

Emeritus Professor Rosalind Croucher, APF Chairperson

Over the next five years of the Strategic Plan, the APF will work to achieve the following strategic outcomes:

  • Outcome 1: More NHRIs in the Asia Pacific that comply with the Paris Principles and can exercise their mandate in safety
  • Outcome 2: NHRIs have strengthened capability to effectively promote, protect and respond to human rights issues
  • Outcome 3: NHRI voices are amplified in regional and international fora
  • Outcome 4: The APF is a well-functioning and governed network with an engaged membership

The Plan also outlines three priority areas identified by APF members to guide its work: gender equality, environment and climate change, and human rights defenders and civic space.
