NIHR launches training program with National Security Agency

The NIHR will begin a training program that will introduce personnel from Bahrain's security forces to key human rights principles.

In accordance with the MoU signed between the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) and the National Security Agency (NSA) Inspector General's Office, the NIHR will conduct a comprehensive human rights training program for NSA personnel commencing on 17 January 2018.

The NSA Inspector General, Mohammed Rashed Al-Rumaihi, commended the efforts afforded by the NIHR in providing human rights training for security forces, reaffirming the significance of raising the awareness of law enforcement personnel in national, regional and international human rights mechanisms, in accordance with the principles stipulated in the constitution of the Kingdom of Bahrain, national legislation and regional and international human rights instruments.

The NIHR Secretary General, Dr. Khalifa A. Al-Fadhel, provided that the NSA human rights training program includes four workshops and lectures from January to September 2018, and aims to train 160 NSA personnel.

The program will focus on national human rights mechanisms, the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, lnhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and its Optional Protocol, in addition to UN treaty and charter-based human rights mechanisms.

The NIHR Secretary General stressed that the training program is central to the NIHR policy to raise human rights awareness, in accordance with the objectives provided in the Institution's strategy.
