The APF is actively involved in the work of the United Nations.
We have developed close working relationships with various United Nations agencies, in particular OHCHR, as well UNDP, UNFPA and UN Women.
The APF was a strong and effective advocate for the independent participation of national human rights institutions in the Human Rights Council, which was established in 2006 to replace the former UN Commission on Human Rights.
We encourage our members to contribute to the work of the Human Rights Council and its mechanisms - such as the Universal Periodic Review and the special procedures - and the human rights treaty bodies.
In partnership with others, we have successfully advocated for NHRIs to be given similar independent participation rights in some UN General Assembly mechanisms, starting with the Open-ended Working Group on Ageing. We have also helped lead a long-standing campaign for NHRI participation rights at the Commission on the Status of Women.
